When you hear the names McCormick Ranch, Gainey Ranch and Scottsdale Ranch, you may wonder why all these wonderful residential areas of Scottsdale are called ranches. It was not just developers coming up with catchy names. It was based on the fact that the lands on which these modern residential communities were built were actually massive working ranches prior to the 1970’s. McCormick Ranch was a 4,200 acre spread owned by Anne and Fowler McCormick. Fowler was the grandson of Cyrus McCormick, the inventor of the grain reaper, and John D. Rockefeller. Anne was a lover of Arabian horses and Black Angus cattle. After Anne died, the ranch was sold in 1970 to Kaiser-Aetna and residential development began in earnest.
Kaiser-Aetna sold off over 1100 of the original acreage and that land became what is now known as Scottsdale Ranch. Gainey Ranch was a 640 acre Arabian Horse farm owned by Daniel C. Gainey that adjoined McCormick ranch. Gainey Ranch was sold in 1980 and residential development began there as well.
The largest of the developments was and remains today McCormick Ranch. The Ranch, as it is referred to by long time residents, was the first large master planned community ever built within existing city limits within the United States. A tremendous amount of thought and planning went into its design creating a vast network of trails (25 Miles), parks and man-made lakes. Streets were planned as private residential enclaves with cul-de-sacs a key feature. To newcomers McCormick Ranch can seem to be a maze of disconnected streets but once you understand the basic layout and purpose behind it, navigating the neighborhoods becomes easy.
